The John C. and Jane Colman Program in the Craft of Teaching, Leadership, and Service

The John C. and Jane Colman Program in the Craft of Teaching, Leadership, and Service is the Divinity School’s unique professionalization certificate program that offers students in-depth training in the art of pedagogy, internship opportunities, and professional skill-building workshops to prepare outstanding leaders who will make an impact in the academic field of religion and in the broader society.
Since 2012, the Colman Program has prepared participants for the Craft of Teaching in the Academic Study of Religion. As of 2021, the program also began to prepare students to be leaders in their fields by bringing the academic study of religion wherever they choose to take it, motivated by the ways that “teaching” is a wide ranging and diverse pursuit. We have realized this expansion by supporting internships and skill-building workshops that allow students to explore various career options, including fundraising and grant writing, advocacy, higher ed administration, journalism and publishing, and more.
Since 2023, the program in its fullest expression has been on hiatus while we re-design and pilot an approach that encourages creative thinking about how students might apply the academic study of religion to solve problems and pursue impactful careers. As we move into 2025 and beyond, check back for past and upcoming opportunities, resources and learning experiences supported by the Colman Program in the Craft of Teaching, Leadership, and Service.
