Buddhism and Beyond: Sculpture from Buddhist sites in Early Historic India
This half-day workshop will focus on sculpture from three different regions with important Buddhist sites in the early centuries of the common era: Gandhara, Andhra, and northern Karnataka. We will discuss the role of sculpture in presenting and shaping the ideas, narratives, and dispositions of Buddhist communities and in wider practices of memorialization.
With presentations by: Catherine Becker (UIC), Alice Casalini (UChicago), Jaś Elsner (Oxford/UChicago), and Andrew Ollett (UChicago).
