<p>The Divinity School, the Philosophy of Religions Workshop, and the Religion, Literature, and Visual Culture Club jointly present: Devotion: Three Inquiries in Religion, Literature, and Political Imagination</p><p> Join Professors Constance M. Furey, Sarah Hammerschlag, and Amy Hollywood for a discussion of Devotion: Three Inquiries in Religion, Literature, and Political Imagination (UChicago, 2021). The book is comprised of three essays, one each from these important figures in contemporary religious studies. Each essay approaches the question of what it means to read devotionally—not to say uncritically, but rather with a “fidelity that is always in some way unsure of, unsettled and challenged by, even if always attached to, at home with, comforted by, its object.” Through the works of Sidney, Luther, Kofman, Susan Howe, and others, these scholars suggest that reading and devotion offer distinct ways of relating to our political future in a time of great uncertainty.
