Spotlights

Jeffrey is a Master of Arts student in the Divinity School studying Latinx and Indigenous religions in the United States, and in 2019 he graduated from Texas State University.

What does your work focus on / revolve around?

My work broadly focuses on Latinx and Indigenous religions in the United States. In particular, I focus on the intersection of law, race, and the policing of these religions by the state.

Who or what inspires you and your work?

Unfortunately, there is very little scholarly attention on the fascinating world of Latinx and Indigenous religions that I grew up in. I am consistently inspired and excited to share this world with the scholarly community and the greater public. The borderlands which shape so much of my work are endless sources of inspiration in my approach to the study of religion.

What is a favorite course you have taken at the Divinity School and what made it a favorite?

My favorite course that I have taken at the Divinity School to date was “American Religious History since 1865.” Although the course title seems standard, it was through this class, its readings, and its instructor that I came to love the study of American Religion and found my niche within religious studies.
