Franklin Joyce

Franklin Joyce focuses on theological formulations of experiences of disintegration, such as mourning, lament, sorrow, despair, and joy. 

Constructively, Joyce's work investigates how theology constructs subjectivities by offering responses to disintegrative experiences. Historically, he is interested in Christian portrayals of death and dying, especially in the wake of the Reformation. Working primarily with Protestant theologies, he is especially interested in the tradition of liberal Protestantism and its articulations in Swift Hall. 

Raised on a farm in the Appalachian mountains of southwest Virginia and trained in philosophy and biology as an undergraduate, Joyce is committed to doing academic theology with an eye to the lived, emplaced meaning of faith in our historical moment. Prior to his doctoral work, Franklin completed an MDiv at the University of Chicago.
