What is the Self—le Soi—the ''me'' that says ''I'' or collectively ''we''? What was for the Ancients the question of Being has become in contemporary philosophy that of the Self. A timeless question asked in multiple ways and which this conference raises again in its diversity. Sponsored jointly by the University of Chicago and the Sorbonne, it brings together American and French philosophers, theologians and cultural historians, many of whom participated in an initial conference on the same subject held in Paris last year.

Papers will be given in English and French. English translations of the French papers will be provided. All sessions are free and open to the public. Persons with disabilities may call 773-702-8200 in advance.
