Swift Sketch

This academic year, the University of Chicago Divinity School launches Swift 100, a year-long celebration marking the centennial of Swift Hall. Since opening its doors in 1925, Swift Hall has been the academic and spiritual home of the Divinity School, welcoming generations of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors into conversation about religion and its role in public life.

At the heart of Swift 100 is a commitment to honoring the building’s rich past while envisioning its future. The celebration will feature a number of special programs and events, including:

  • A History in 100 Objects – a digital and physical exhibit that tells the story of Swift Hall through one hundred artifacts, from architectural details to cherished community traditions.

  • Open House Chicago – for the first time, Swift Hall will be featured in the citywide architectural festival on October 18–19, 2025.

  • Swift 100 Birthday Party – on November 7, 2025, the Divinity School will host a community celebration honoring the building’s centennial.

  • Grounds of Being and Community Spotlights – special events at the beloved student-run café and a content series lifting up the voices and memories of those who have shaped the Divinity School.

“Swift Hall has been our intellectual and spiritual home for a hundred years,” said Dean James T. Robinson. “Swift 100 is a moment not just to look back with gratitude, but also to look forward, to the next century of scholarship, teaching, and public engagement that will emerge from this historic building.”

Alumni, friends, and community members are invited to participate by sharing photos and remembrances, attending events, and engaging with the year’s stories and reflections.
