Prof. Raissa von Doetinchem de Rande publishes 'The Politics of Islamic Ethics'
July 16, 2025
Assistant Professor of Religious Ethics Raissa von Doetinchem de Rande's new book, The Politics of Islamic Ethics: Hierarchy and Human Nature in the Philosophical Tradition (Cambridge, July 2025), was published this week.
The book investigates two central passages in the Qur'an and Hadith literature, in which it is asserted that God created human beings in a specific manner. Instead of discussing the usual figures who have commented on those texts, Prof. de Rande examines a group of classical Islamic philosophers rarely discussed in conjunction with ethical matters.
A Dean’s Forum celebrating this new book will be held in February 2026.
