Scientists have built a synthetic cell from scratch for the first time, and Laurie Zoloth, Margaret E. Burton Professor of Biomedical Ethics, was among the voices CNN turned to for perspective on what it means.

The cell, nicknamed SpudCell, was assembled from nonliving molecular components by a team led by synthetic biologist Kate Adamala at the University of Minnesota, working with Drew Endy of Stanford. Unlike earlier synthetic biology milestones, SpudCell can take in nutrients, grow, and divide, though only under carefully controlled lab conditions. Endy noted that the cell has no capacity to reproduce on its own outside that setting.

Rather than patent the technology, the team has founded a nonprofit, Biotic, to govern how SpudCell is shared and used, with free access for academic and nonprofit researchers and licensing fees for commercial applications. Zoloth pointed to that structure as a partial answer to the ethical questions any new biotechnology raises.

"We will have to see how it endures in its first, idealistic form," she told CNN. "I hope it does."

The governance questions Zoloth raises—who benefits, who decides, who sets the guardrails—sit at the center of her broader scholarship in biomedical ethics, work that regularly brings the Divinity School into conversation with fast-moving developments in science and technology.
