The Divinity School has modified its grading practices to allow students greater flexibility to deal with the circumstances of the current health crisis for Spring Quarter 2020.

Divinity School graduate students may take any class offered by the Divinity School on a Pass/Fail basis in the Spring 2020 quarter.

Each degree program has policies around quality grades. Students taking courses on a pass/fail basis during Spring 2020 will remain in good academic standing, despite standing programmatic requirements.

  • In accordance with College policy, undergraduate students may request a pass/fail grade in all RLST courses taken as a Free Elective with the consent of the instructor. For spring 2020, RLST will also implement a pass/fail option for Major/Minor requirements. Students who wish to receive quality grades for courses taken to fulfill RLST Major/Minor requirements may do so. Students may also request a pass/fail grade in RLST courses taken to fulfill Major/Minor requirements. For Pass-Fail grading, the student and instructor reach an informal agreement before the instructor submits a grade for the course. Faculty will determine the criteria that constitute a Pass.
  • For AMRS and MA students, any courses taken on a Pass/Fail basis will count toward requisite faculty committee distribution requirements and/or required electives for program progression. MA students may not take any courses that meet the language requirement on a Pass/Fail basis.
  • Ministry students may elect to take the required cohort sequence, field engagement, language, and/or exegesis courses on a Pass/Fail basis to be counted toward program progression.
  • Courses taken on a Pass/Fail basis will count toward the 12-quality grade course requirement for doctoral students. Hence, doctoral students will nothave to take additional courses to make up for any courses taken on a Pass/Fail basis. Doctoral students may not take any courses that meet the language requirement on a Pass/Fail basis.

According to the Divinity School Announcements and PhD handbook, a grade of Pass is equivalent to a quality grade of B- or better for masters’ students. A grade of Pass is equivalent to a quality grade of B or better for doctoral students.

In keeping with Divinity’s School current practice, students should work with individual instructors to reach a mutual understanding about what constitutes a passing grade. Students must forward written consent from the instructor with the request to change the grading basis to Pass/Fail to the Dean of Students Office. The deadline to submit these requests to the Dean of Students Office has been extended from Friday of Week 3 to Wednesday of Week 9- Wednesday, June 3, 2020.

These policy changes are intended to provide students with flexibility in addressing the current unprecedented circumstances, and apply only to the Spring 2020 academic term.

Divinity School graduate students with questions should contact the Dean of Students Office at divinitydos@uchicago.edu. RLST students in the College should contact their academic advisor.
