For the academic year 2006-2007, the Divinity School will offer its students the option of certifying reading competence in German by taking an exam offered to Divinity School students only. Because of expressed concerns on the part of faculty and students beyond the Divinity School regarding the University-administered German exam, the faculty of the Divinity School has agreed to offer this exam initially for the 2006-07 academic year only. It is not the Divinity School’s intent to create a parallel structure within the University, and therefore, the Divinity School German exam will be discontinued once concerns with the University process have been rectified.
The Divinity School German exam is based on texts selected by a committee
of the Divinity School faculty consisting of one member from each of the
faculty committees. The texts selected represent important current scholarly
work on religion written in German, and as yet not translated into English.
The texts are: F.W. Graf, Moses Vermaechtnis. Ueber goettliche und
menschliche Gesetze (Beck, 2006) , H.G. Reventlow, Epochen der Bibelauslegung,
vol III,
Renaissance, Reformation, Humanismus (Beck, 1997), and a third text to be
selected. They will be available on reserve at Regenstein Library. The exam
will be administered and graded by a professional, not a member of the faculty,
who will select three excerpts from among these texts for each quarter’s
examination. Students will be asked to translate two of three excerpts and
will have two hours to translate these selections into idiomatic English,
with the use of a dictionary. The exam will be graded on a scale of 100
points; a grade of 80 is required to certify reading competence. Students
may take these exams as many times as is necessary to establish reading
competence.
Students should register for the exam online using the following course information:
