Border Crossing: Collaborative Theological Reflection for Ministry

Teaching Fellow Announcement: Senior Ministry Thesis Seminar

The Divinity School's Ministry Program invites Ph.D. students to apply for a teaching fellow position for the 2009-2010 academic year. This fellow would join the teaching team for the program's Senior Ministry Project Seminar, required of all third-year ministry students. The ministry thesis is the culminating project of the M.Div. degree, bringing the student's academic and field work to bear on an issue of significance to the practice of ministry. The seminar, which meets during the winter quarter under the direction of a teaching team composed of a faculty member and a Ph.D. student, focuses specific attention on the theological, historical and scriptural resources for ministry, and involves engaged dialogue around portions of student theses in progress.

This fellowship is part of the Divinity School's Border Crossing Project, which aims to develop and support the intersection of ministry and academic interests at the Divinity School, supported by a generous grant from the Lilly Endowment. The fellow will have the opportunity to develop teaching skills, particularly in theological education, and reflect on her or his vocation as teacher. The project will also encourage fellows to reflect on the nature of teaching for ministry through meetings with other fellows and members of the Divinity School community.

Fellows will work with the faculty member to design the seminar process, engage in the seminar by offering questions and feedback from one's own methodological perspective, and hold office hours to assist students with their thesis development. The bulk of the work takes place in the winter quarter, although the fellow will hold preliminary meetings with students in the fall quarter and attend public presentations of projects in the spring term. Reflecting this additional work, the position will be compensated above the standard rate for graduate teaching assistants at the Divinity School.

Applications for this position should include a resume and a cover letter, which should identify professional and academic resources for supporting student research in practical theology and discuss potential vocational plans. Inquiries and applications should be directed to Daniel Sack, administrator of the Border Crossing Project (sack@uchicago.edu). Application deadline is May 1.
