Border Crossing: Collaborative Theological Reflection for Ministry

Teaching Fellow Announcement: Elective Ministry Course

The Divinity School's Ministry Program invites Ph.D. students to apply to teach a seminar-style elective course in ministry studies, relating their field of research to some aspect of ministerial practice, to be taught spring quarter, 2010. Students should be degree candidates before applying; prior teaching experience is preferred but not required.

This instructor-level appointment offers the experience of designing one's own course appropriate to the goals of theological education. It is expected that the successful candidate will develop the class syllabus and reflect on class engagement and the creation of assignments in consultation with one's faculty advisor and the Director of Ministry Studies. A course budget will be available for funding experimentation in teaching method, field trips, or special class sessions with clergy or congregations. The position is compensated at the standard rate for instructors at the Divinity School.

This fellowship is part of the Divinity School's Border Crossing Project, which aims to develop and support the intersection of ministry and academic interests at the Divinity School, supported by a generous grant from the Lilly Endowment. The fellow will have the opportunity to develop teaching skills, particularly in theological education, and reflect on her or his vocation as teacher. The project will also encourage fellows to reflect on the nature of teaching for ministry through meetings with other fellows and members of the Divinity School community.

Applications for this position should include a cover letter, a resume, the names of two faculty references, and a course proposal. That proposal should include a tentative syllabus with course schedule and reading list, with specific course outcomes. Inquiries and applications should be directed to Daniel Sack, administrator of the Border Crossing Project (sack@uchicago.edu). Application deadline is May 1.
