L. Balch is Professor of New Testament at Brite Divinity School, Texas Christian
University, in Fort Worth, Texas. He is author of Let Wives Be Submissive: The

Margaret Lamberts Bendroth is Codirector of the Women and Twentieth-Century
Protestantism project at Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Centre,

Yale University Press, 1993) and many articles.

Don S.
Browning is the Alexander Campbell Professor of Ethics and the Social Sciences
at The University of Chicago Divinity School and Director of the Religion, Culture,
and Family Project. He is author of nine books including A Fundamental Practical
Theology (Philadelphia: Fortress Press, 1991), Religious Thought and the Modern
Psychologies (Philadelphia: Fortress Press, 1987), and Religious Ethics and
