On
October 8-10, 2003, more than forty historians will gather at the University
of Chicago Divinity School to share their research on the history of women
and religion in America. Speakers will introduce us to a group of fascinating
women who have been largely absent in narratives of American religious
history, including accused "witches," evangelical slaves, Mormon
wives, Native American converts, Protestant health reformers, Catholic
sisters, African-American performers, women rabbis, and feminist theologians.
Most important, speakers will ask larger questions about why women's history
matters.
The conference will include several workshops in which historians will discuss papers that have been circulated in advance. Beginning on September 1, 2003, participants can download workshop papers from the Martin Marty Center website. Alternately, participants may request that copies of up to three papers be sent to them by mail. Contact Catherine A. Brekus, The University of Chicago Divinity School, 1025 East 58th Street, Chicago, Illinois 60637.
