General Information

The Divinity School offers dual degree programs with the University’s Irving B. Harris School of Public Policy Studies, Law School, and School of Social Service Administration. These programs serve students who wish to combine education in religion or ministry with professional training in public policy, law or social work. In addition to making these pursuits formally possible at the University, the dual degree programs usually allow students to complete the two degrees together in less time than if they were pursued separately.

Admissions
Applicants must gain acceptance to both schools to enroll in a dual degree program. The prospective student may apply to both schools prior to matriculation and indicate on each application his or her intent to pursue the dual degree. Students may also, however, wait and make application during their first year at the Divinity School to the relevant A.M. or J.D. program, and enter the dual degree program upon acceptance by the Harris School, Law School, or SSA. At each school, offers of admission are for the fall quarter only.

Financial Aid
Students enrolled in the dual degree programs are eligible for financial assistance in any particular quarter from the school at which they are registering. The financial aid policies of the four schools differ significantly and students should anticipate that tuition charges and financial assistance will vary depending on where they are registered for a particular quarter.

Registration
Students in the dual degree program with the Harris School or SSA register for a total of eight quarters at the Divinity School and four quarters at the respective school. The recommended sequence is for the student to spend the first two years (six quarters) at the Divinity School, the third year (three quarters) and the first quarter (fall) of the fourth year at the Harris School or SSA, and the final two quarters (winter and spring) at the Divinity School.

The Divinity School and the University’s Irving B. Harris School of Public Policy Studies offer a dual degree program for students whose professional plans require training in both ministry and public policy. Students in this program must register for eight quarters in the Divinity School and four quarters in the cooperating school. The recommended arrangement is the completion of two years (six quarters) at the Divinity School, followed by one year and one quarter (four quarters) at the Harris School, followed by two final quarters at the Divinity School. Dual M.Div./A.M. with the School of Social Service Administration

The Divinity School and the University’s School of Social Service Administration offer a dual degree program for students whose professional plans require training in both ministry and social work. Students in this program must register for eight quarters in the Divinity School and four quarters in the cooperating school. The recommended arrangement is the completion of two years (six quarters) at the Divinity School, followed by one year and one quarter (four quarters) at SSA, followed by two final quarters at the Divinity School.

Fieldwork

The M.Div. from the Divinity School and the A.M. from the School of Social Service Administration each require students to complete two field education components. For the Divinity School, these requirements are:

1. The Field Education Internship (the second-year placement in a local congregation under the supervision of one of the Teaching Pastors and the Director of Ministry Studies).

2. Another unit of fieldwork (a more focused field experience, usually completed after the field education internship).

SSA requires two yearlong fieldwork assignments.

Students in the dual degree program must meet the field education requirements of both schools, but are usually able to arrange for the second yearlong fieldwork requirement at SSA to fulfill the second fieldwork requirement of the Divinity School as well. They are thus able to complete the field education requirements for both degrees with three field placements, rather than the four that would be necessary if the degrees were completed separately. This arrangement is subject to the approval of the Director of Ministry Studies in the Divinity School. Approval should be secured before beginning the second yearlong assignment for SSA.
